SHIP

Ghosting, ringed with spouts,
Sharks surround your sudden drops,
Foam mount up around you,
Nothing seen too close, too sharp,
Galled by miles of spray,
Spume burst through your top,
Unlived, unwashed, and yet
The picture of our dreams,
Our hope, our solace from the wet,
Skeleton of sky, of rain,
Of endless clouds around
A darkening and reaching sea,
Comb and beach, stall and heel,
Haul our life back from your keel.
