POEMS FOR MESSIAEN

MESSIAEN'S VISIONS OF EXISTENCE

He wrote his most famous work, Quartet for The End of
Time, in 1941 as a prisoner in a German camp in Silesia.
It became a quartet because there were three other musicians
who were in the camp with him. Returning to Paris
from a concentration camp, Messiaen discovered his first
wife Claire was dying in a hospital. Out of this came the
Visions.

Like most of his works, Visions weaves his devout
Roman Catholicism into ecstatic visions of the cosmos
and of nature.

You’d expect the Amens to be meditative; but the music
is in fact cosmic.

I chose a few of my poems to go with the Amens.
