AT NIGHT THE OCEAN GROWS

waves wash in and ricochet

Moorish breezes sweep the fronds

seagrape dozes on the bay

shore clouds leap above the ponds

evening slows the storming day

and the oars of ocean race

the floating stars that bend and sway

as wind picks up the pace

now hackles of the calm lagoon

rise alien as the sickle

of the rusting moon

as morning’s lucent coral

lies whirled in the howling deep

that blows the island into sleep
